MITSUBISHI 2.8TD 4M40 TIMING CHAIN WITH SPLIT LINK
Quality replacement timing chain with a removable joining link, designed to make fitting considerably easier than a conventional continuous chain.
THE ADVANTAGE OF A SPLIT-LINK TIMING CHAIN
Replacing a continuous timing chain on the Mitsubishi 4M40 engine can be a time-consuming job because so many components must be removed to access the chain.
With this split-link chain, an experienced mechanic can open the old chain, connect it to the new one and carefully draw the replacement chain through the engine. This avoids the need to remove the front timing chain cover and saves hours of dismantling and reassembly.
An experienced mechanic should be able to fit this split-link timing chain in no more than a couple of hours, compared with the much longer job of fitting a conventional continuous chain.
If you are concerned about the condition of your timing chain, replacing it during your next planned service may be a practical way to reduce the additional labour involved.

IS YOUR TIMING CHAIN MAKING A NOISE?
An unusual chuffing, rubbing or metallic chattering noise from the front of the engine may indicate wear in the timing chain or its associated components.
A worn or stretched chain can rub against the chain guides. However, other faults can produce similar noises, so the cause should be checked before ordering parts.
A severely worn or broken timing chain can cause serious internal engine damage, including damage to pistons and valves. If you suspect a timing-chain problem, have it checked promptly.
FITTING INFORMATION
Correct engine timing and secure installation of the joining link are essential.
We recommend fitting by a mechanic familiar with the Mitsubishi 4M40 engine.
SPLIT-LINK TIMING CHAIN FITTING VIDEO
Watch this Wheeler Dealers demonstration of a roll-in timing chain being fitted to a Mercedes V8 engine.
Although this engine is different from the Mitsubishi 4M40, the video perfectly shows the core principle of using the old chain to pull the new chain smoothly through the engine block.
